Twelfth-ranked Saint Marys owns the highest ranking in school history this week, and the Gaels (5-0) might even climb into the top 10 next week if they win their game at Stanford on Wednesday (11 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network). This might be the Gaels toughest game so far, partly because it will be on their opponents home court and partly because the Cardinal (6-1) played well in a recent tournament in Orlando, Fla.Although Stanford lost to Miami (Fla.) in its first game of the AdvoCare Invitational, it rebounded to beat Indiana State 65-62 and Seton Hall 66-52 in its next two games.First-year Stanford coach Jerod Haase was particularly pleased with the way his team responded after Seton Hall shot out to a 20-10 lead Sunday. They punched us in the mouth the first 10 minutes and we kind of stumbled back, Haase said, according to the Bay Area News Group. I challenged them. Im so proud of how they bounced back and contained it for the last 30 minutes.Guard Dorian Pickens was the Stanford star of the two tournament victories, hitting the game-winning 3-pointer against Indiana State and scoring 21 points in the win over Seton Hall.Dorian is so smooth, so confident, so fluid, Haase said.Pickens shoots 50.7 percent overall, 45.2 percent on 3-pointers and 84.6 percent from the foul line. He provides a challenge for Saint Marys backcourt of Joe Rahon and Emmett Naar, both of whom were all-West Coast Conference selections last season and played a solid game in the Gaels 76-63 victory over UAB in Las Vegas on Sunday. Our guards really did a good job of controlling the game, Saint Marys coach Randy Bennett said.Rahon and Naar had seven assists apiece in that game, and both played all 40 minutes.Naar also made 2 of 3 3-pointers and has hit 54.5 percent of his long-range shots this season. Stefan Gonzalez came off the bench to hit 4 of 6 3-point shots against UAB, improving his season success rate from beyond the arc to 55.6 percent.Got some big minutes out of Stef, Bennett said. He hit some big shots for us.The Gaels are outstanding shooters, making 39.8 percent of their 3-point shots and 82.7 percent of their free throws, which ranks third in the country.Despite the strong play of Pickens, Naar and Rahon, the biggest scoring threats of both teams reside in the paint.Stanfords 6-foot-8 Reid Travis scored in double figures in all seven games and is averaging 17.4 points on 55.4 percent shooting while collecting 10.1 rebounds a game. The Gaels 6-11 Jock Landale averages 21.0 points (on 76.3 percent shooting) and 9.2 rebounds. The Cardinal have a second inside presence in Michael Humphrey, an athletic 6-9 post player who has not been as productive as expected. He averages just 7.9 points per game after scoring 10.3 points per game last season.Stanfords biggest improvement from last season may be at the defensive end. The Cardinal allowed their first seven opponents to shoot just 37 percent from the field after yielding 46 percent shooting during last seasons 15-15 campaign, which led to the firing of coach Johnny Dawkins.Bennett has a reputation for getting the most out of his team defensively, but he is not satisfied by what he is seeing so far. Saint Marys is allowing opponents to shoot 43.5 percent from the field. We had some good stretches tonight (defensively), Bennett said after the UAB game. We need more of them. We probably had 25 minutes of good defense; thats got to get closer to 37, 38 minutes, and I think thats where we were last year.Bennett hopes a healthy Dane Pineau will help. Pineau, a forward and a preseason all-conference selection, missed last weeks San Jose State game with back spasms and played only limited minutes in the other four games because of the back issue. He is expected to see more playing time against the Cardinal. Marcus Mariota Womens Jersey . R.J. RIO DE JANEIRO -- There wont be a golden sweep in the green Olympic diving pool.Britain upset China to win the mens synchronized 3-meter springboard Wednesday, with Jack Laugher and Chris Mears totaling 454.32 points for their countrys first Olympic diving gold in history. When the scores came up and it obviously said that we had won I was still like, `No, someone is playing a horrible prank on me, Mears said. It was crazy, absolutely crazy, but Im absolutely buzzing.American duo Sam Dorman and Mike Hixon took silver with 450.21. Chinas Cao Yuan and Qin Kai settled for bronze with 443.70, ending their countrys bid to sweep the eight diving medals at the Rio de Janeiro Games. The Chinese had won the first three synchro events. On a dreary, windy day at Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre, a steady drizzle fell throughout the six-round final. The pools water was green for the second straight day, with games officials struggling to correct what they say is decreased alkalinity thats causing the change from clear blue to murky green.Being from the U.K., were very much used to rain, wind and all that kind of stuff, Laugher said.Qin was trying to win a third straight 3-meter synchro gold medal with his third different partner. But the 30-year-old Chinese -- oldest in the contest and owner of five Olympic medals -- faltered in the third round, dropping his team to second behind the British.I am the reason I did not do well, Qin said through a translator. I wasnt strong enough in my mindset. I didnt really focus enough.China fell to third in the next round, but moved up to second after its fifth dive. Cao and Qin earned scores ranging from 8.5 to 9.0, leaving them within 2.64 points of Britain heading into the last round. Laugher and Mears nailed the toughest dive any team attempted in the final, scoring 86.58 points in the fifth round. The Brits, Americans and Chinese all attempted the same dive to close the contest.Dorman and Hixon went first, scoring 98.04 to take over first, with the British and Chinese still to come. The Ammericans endured a five-minute wait while Mexicos duo, who competed in front of them, sought a do-over.ddddddddddddeading into the last dive, having the Mexicans try to re-dive was beneficial, Dorman said. Having them distract us and me wondering what was going on took a lot off my mind.Jahir Ocampo and Rommel Pacheco complained to officials after a temporary light on scaffolding above the pool suddenly turned on while they were starting their dive.At first, it appeared the Mexicans would be allowed to go again, and they climbed back on the boards. Hixon had already started up the stairs, thinking it was his turn before going back down to wait.Ocampo and Pacheco stood on the boards waiting for the judges to give the go signal. It never came. They werent allowed another attempt. It wouldnt have affected the medal finish, but might have moved the Mexicans up to fourth instead of fifth among the eight teams. We were going to do it again, but when we were up there waiting for the whistle to jump, they announced our scores and we had to come down again to protest, Pacheco said.He said he thought Mexico would protest to FINA, the sports world governing body. They might admit that they were wrong, but it wont change anything, Pacheco said. After Hixon celebrated his teams execution by punching the water, the Brits grabbed the top spot back, although at 91.20, they didnt score as high as the Americans.GB did an unbelievable last dive as well, Hixon said. We sort of made them earn it, but they absolutely did.On Chinas last dive, Qin struggled again, failing to enter the water straight on a forward 4+ somersaults dive carrying a 3.8 degree of difficulty that scored 83.22.Its a lot of pressure and yes, we were a little bit nervous, Cao said.China failed to win gold in the event for the first time since the 2004 Athens Games.---Associated Press Writer Carlos Rodriguez contributed to this report.
