MILWAUKEE -- As a native of the state, Greg Gard has no problem understanding the significance of the Wisconsin-Marquette rivalry, which continues Saturday morning when the teams meet at the Bradley Center for the 123rd installment of a series that dates to 1917.Gard has had a front-row seat for the last 13 meetings between the two teams, serving as top assistant to Bo Ryan, but this will be his first as head coach, having taken over for Ryan just days after Marquette stunned the Badgers 57-55 a year ago in Madison. You appreciate the tradition you appreciate the games that have taken place in the past ... just the players that have played in that game, the coaches that have coached in it, Gard said. Obviously you have two programs in the state who have had success. You appreciate those things. The Badgers (8-2) come to Milwaukee ranked No. 17 in the nation and on a roll, having won four in a row and seven of their last eight, with only a loss to then-No. 4 North Carolina during that stretch.Nigel Hayes scored a season-high 28 points against Oklahoma last weekend and is shooting 58.3 percent from the field during those four games.Wisconsins defense has been strong too, holding eight of the last eight opponents to season-low scoring totals and is fourth in the nation with a plus-14.5 rebounding margin. But that defense will be tested by Marquettes talented sophomore backcourt of Traci Carter and Hannif Cheatham while senior 7-footer Luke Fischer is an imposing force in the middle and Sam Hauser has been dangerous from long distance.During its five-game winning streak, Fischer is 31-for-36 from the field and Hauser is hitting 3-pointers at a 56 percent clip (14-of-25) for Marquette (7-2).Its really exciting to play them, said Hauser, a native of Stevens Point, Wis., earlier this week. Its a big game for all of us. We really have to lock in these next two days and prepare and buy into the details of what theyre going to do and how were going to defend it. ... Were 2-0 so far this week and looking to make it 3-0.Carter, averaging 4.3 points and 3.6 assists per game, sat out Marquettes 84-81 victory over Fresno State earlier this week with a sore left knee and is considered day-to-day, according to head coach Steve Wojciechowski. He had a couple knee surgeries in high school, Wojciechowski said. Its not a surgery thing (this time), hes just got to feel better.Wojciechowski will be facing the Badgers for third time in his head coaching career. What Ive seen is one of the best teams in the United States, Wojciechowski said. The very first thing you recognize with them is they have a tremendous amount of winning experience. They have guys who are in supremely key roles that are accustomed to winning. (Bronson) Koenig and Hayes have been a part of I dont know how many wins there, (Zak) Showalters the same.Wisconsin has won three of the last five meetings between the two teams in Milwaukee and 11 of the last 20 games overall. Trevor Bayliss has hailed Englands performance in the first Test against India as the best since Ive been with the team.Appointed just ahead of the 2015 Ashes, Bayliss period in charge as coach has seen notable victories over Australia at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge, and an impressive win over South Africa in Johannesburg. But although England were held to a draw in Rajkot, Bayliss was delighted with the commitment shown by the side in gruelling conditions and on surfaces on which English players traditionally struggle. And, so impressed was Bayliss with the improvement in his team since the defeat in Dhaka, he suggested it proved England could win the series if they maintained that level of performance.Win, lose or draw, I thought effort-wise thats probably the best performance weve had since Ive been with the team, Bayliss said. The way the guys played in this Test should give us plenty of confidence. Our batters played well against their spinners, and our spinners and seamers all bowled well. We acquitted ourselves very well. Were under no illusions that these next four Tests could be even tougher than this one. But if we put in more performances like that, well probably be playing consistent cricket - and thats what were after - and well have a chance of winning more games. So weve got to continue putting in that effort. But if we do, weve a chance of winning.Bayliss was particularly effusive in his praise for new opening batsman Haseeb Hameed. The 19-year-old debutant scored more than 100 runs in the match and evoked in Bayliss some of the same characteristics of Kumar Sangakkara, who he worked with during his time as Sri Lanka coach. Its early days for Hameed, Bayliss said. But the early signs are that hes a very, very good player. For one so young, 19, his composure is very good. He knows how his game works - something that players years in advance of him woulld like to have - and without wanting to put too much pressure on him, the signs are good.ddddddddddddHes one of those batters, a little bit like a Sangakkara, who just loves batting. Whether its in the nets, having throwdowns or with a tennis ball in the changing room, he just loves to have a bat in his hand.It was obviously a very good start. Hes been with the squad for about six weeks, but it feels like hes been here for two or three years - hes got that type of a personality.Without committing himself, Bayliss hinted England may well stick to the same XI for the second Test in Visakhapatnam, which starts from November 17. Stating he liked the idea of playing three spinners of varying types - England picked an offspinner (Moeen Ali), a left-arm spinner (Zafar Ansari) and a legspinner (Adil Rashid) in Rajkot - his words suggested Gareth Batty (also an offspinner) may miss out again. We went with these three guys, but we could very easily have gone with Batty, Bayliss said. Hes actually also been bowling quite well. But we thought on this occasion we would have a look at a spinner of each type and those three performed well in this game.James Anderson also looks set for more frustration. While England are encouraged by his progress, he may have to wait until the third Test to make his return from injury with Bayliss requiring a little more evidence before selecting him as one of a three-man seam attack in tough conditions.Well assess him in the next couple of days, Bayliss said. But from all reports, hes been bowling well in the nets. The medical staff say hes in better shape than he was when he came back and played against Pakistan. Well put him through his paces again. Hes a guy whos always looked after himself, so hes nicely fit. ' ' '
