Chopard Official Timekeeper and Worldwide Sponsor of the 2024 1000 Miglia
Drivers, wind up your watches and start your engines! More than 440 of the world’s finest classic cars, 1,000 miles of Italy’s most breathtaking roads, two special new chronographs and Chopard at the starting line. This can only mean one thing: the 2024 1000 Miglia. Chopard will once again serve as Official Timekeeper and Worldwide Sponsor of the “World’s Most Beautiful Race” for the 37th consecutive year, further consolidating one of the longest-standing partnerships in the history of watchmakers and motor racing. Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, whose love for the 1000 Miglia is equally enduring, will be participating once again – for the 36th time – alongside his good friend Jacky Ickx in the Scheufele family’s beloved “Metal Strawberry” Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing (look out for number 264).
Chopard pays tribute to a racing legend
This year, the Chopard stand in Brescia’s Piazza Vittoria, just a few minutes from the starting and finishing ramps of the Corso Venezia, will be decorated in memory of Brussels-born Jack Ickx. Between 1966 and 1985, Ickx won the 24 Hours of Le Mans six times. He also won eight races in Formula 1, 25 podiums, and won the 1975 Cam-Am series and the grueling 1983 Paris-Dakar Rally. In addition to exhibiting pictures and memorabilia documenting Jack Ickx’s illustrious racing career, the stand will also feature two Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph JX7 special editions recently launched in his honor.
2024 Mille Miglia Editions Unveiled
Competitors will also have the opportunity to see the much-anticipated 2024 Mille Miglia special editions – for the 36th consecutive edition – which this year include two different models. Both models will be launched at a special dinner on the eve of the race at Brescia’s fabulous Areadocks, a restaurant, bar and boutique hotel converted from an abandoned railway warehouse.
The first, the Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph, is made from ultra-durable exclusive Lucent Steel™, which is at least 80% recycled. The 40.5mm-diameter chronograph features a “La Gara” (or “The Race”) dial, inspired by the famous checkered flag in motorsport. The dial is topped by a beautiful “glass box” crystal that provides maximum visibility at all times, while the fluted winding crown and knurled pushers are reminiscent of a sports car’s brake pedal while providing optimal grip. The sapphire crystal caseback offers a bird’s eye view of the mechanical self-winding, chronometer-certified movement, while the perforated black calfskin strap complements the chronograph subdials while recalling the design of traditional driving gloves.
The second watch created specifically for this year’s race is the Mille Miglia GTS Chrono Italia Limited Edition, with a 44mm case in lightweight sandblasted titanium. This watch will be produced in a limited edition of 100 pieces, in pure celebration of the birthplace of this legendary race.
A long and winding road
Both new Mille Miglia watches are perfect companions for this year’s race, which begins at midday with the first car leaving the starting ramp and the others following in 20-second intervals, in order of age, with the oldest cars at the front. Once the race begins, the teams will head counter-clockwise to the first overnight stop in Turin before driving along the western coast of northern Italy the next day and arriving (for the first time) in Genoa, the vibrant capital of Liguria, for lunch.
The second day’s journey ends in Viareggio, halfway to Rome, and the following morning the crews will head inland via the well-preserved historic town of Lucca before reaching the “Eternal City” by nightfall.
The fourth leg then includes the thrilling and testing Prato, Futa and Laticosa passes, before the final return to Brescia the next day - after some 1,076 miles, the long-awaited chequered flag will wave.
